Apple Maps vs Google Maps: Privacy Comparison (2026)
Short answer
Apple Maps ties far less to you: Apple says searches and routes use random identifiers that rotate, not your Apple ID. Signed in, Google Maps saves your searches — and, with Timeline on, where you go — to your Google account, where they can shape the ads you see. Switching? Move your saved places.
What each app collects
Apple's column is how Apple describes its own design. Google's assumes you're signed in with history turned on.
| What's collected | Apple Maps | Google Maps |
|---|---|---|
| Searches | Not linked to your Apple ID | Saved to your account |
| Where you go | Apple says it can’t read it — Visited Places (iOS 26) is end-to-end encrypted | Saved in your Timeline |
| Routes | Seen in segments, not whole trips | Also saved in Timeline |
| Ads | Apple's business isn't built on ads | Can shape the ads you see |

The practical difference
- A sensitive search. Search “oncologist” in Google Maps and it's saved to your account, where it may influence the ads you see across Google. In Apple Maps, Apple says the search is tied to a random identifier that rotates, not to your Apple ID.
- A sensitive trip. With Timeline on, a drive to the clinic shows up in your Google Timeline. Apple says it keeps no location profile of you.
Keep less in Google Maps
- Turn off or pause Timeline (location history) if you don't use it.
- Use Incognito mode for searches you don't want saved to your account.
Pausing isn't everything. Even with location history paused, Google can still collect some location data through Maps searches.
FAQ
Is Apple Maps really private or just marketing?
More than marketing, but you are taking Apple's word for it. Apple says Maps ties searches and routes to random identifiers that rotate instead of your Apple ID, and its business model doesn't depend on your location data.
Does Apple Maps' privacy approach hurt accuracy?
Mostly not. Apple Maps uses anonymized, aggregated data from iPhones for traffic, plus map data from partners such as TomTom. In most big cities, traffic, ETAs and places are comparable to Google Maps; Google still has more reviews and photos.
Does switching to Apple Maps mean giving up Google Maps features?
Some. Google has far more reviews and photos, plus Street View. Apple Maps has Look Around, Guides, Siri integration and offline maps. For everyday navigation, both do the job.
